Trichology is the part of Dermatology that is responsible for the study of hair and its diseases. At Dermamedicin we have a Trichology unit, directed by Dr. Nayra Merino, dermatologist and international Master in Trichology and Hair Transplant. In addition to Dr. Solange Castro, also a specialist in Trichology and Dra. Noelia Hernández, dermatologist.

To begin with, a correct diagnosis of the type of alopecia is essential to establish an adequate and early treatment. For this, an adequate clinical assessment is necessary with pilotration, trichoscopy, trichogram, Tricoscale®, and, if necessary, taking a biopsy. , evaluation with wood light and/or washing test.

Treatments can be topical, oral, semi-invasive (in the form of mesotherapy or infiltrations) and/or surgical. Within the surgical treatment, hair transplantation with follicular micrografts (or follicular unit transplantation) stands out.

The result of the transplant with micrografts is natural and optimal, clearly differentiating itself from the old results that caused what is called "doll hair."

It is indicated in androgenetic alopecia (the main indication in both men and women), secondary scarring alopecia (due to burns, trauma...), stable primary scarring alopecia for at least 1-2 years, triangular alopecia and alopecia in other locations ( beard, eyebrows, mustache...).

Correct prior assessment of the patient is essential, correctly assessing the donor area, the recipient area, the patient's age, family history and the patient's habits. In addition, it is important to carry out a correct design, agreeing on it with the patient, that complies with a series of basic principles, such as that from the first hairline at the level of the forehead and the medial area of the eyebrow, at least 7- 9cm.

There are 3 phases:

Phase 1. Extraction of the grafts from the donor area. To do this, the area is anesthetized and the grafts are extracted. Extraction can be done using 2 techniques:

  • FUSS, FUT or STRIP technique: consists of the extraction of a strip of skin from the posterior region of the scalp, from which the micrografts are subsequently obtained, by separating the follicles from the strip using a microscope. To close the wound, a technique called trichophytic suture is used, which allows hair to grow through the scar and thus disguise it.
  • FUE Technique: It is the most used technique currently. It involves extracting the micrografts hair by hair using a round scalpel (called a punch). It is necessary to shave the hair from the entire donor area, but it does not require stitches.

Phase 2. Design of the recipient area: anesthetize the recipient area and make the incisions where the follicular units will be implanted.

Phase 3. Implantation: placement of the micrografts.

Hair transplant is a laborious process that lasts about 6 hours, but it is a very safe procedure, which only requires local anesthesia and is performed on an outpatient basis (without admission).

The result obtained is very natural, given the modern form of hair-by-hair implantation. Our team performs the procedure in a large hospital center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which has the most modern facilities.

At Dermamedicin we have Dr. Nayra Merino, specialist in Dermatology, expert in Trichology and Hair Transplant.
